Pilato Punches A 1:05.33 Italian 100 Breaststroke Record At Settecolli

Italians, led by Benedetta Pilato and a 1:05.33 Italian record in the 100m breaststroke, fired out a series of fast swims on the opening day at the Settecolli in Rome, which ends Sunday, deadline day for entries to the Paris Olympics.

Pilato’s 1:05.33, blew away the 1:05.67 at which Arianna Castiglioni had held the national standard since 2021 in the same pool at the Foro Italico and liftd her from 23rd all-time on 1:05.70 to 14th all-time.

Pilato secured the win with a 30.33 opening split, Britain’s Angharad Evans closest on 30.94 en route to a 1:05.91 chasing down the Italian and 0.37sec shy of her own national record. Third home was Italy’s Martina Carraro in 1:06.43.

After Ceccon’s 52.43 was followed by Michel Lamberti‘s 53.35, British sprint ace Ben Proud clocked 21.62 ahead of respective efforts of 21.76 and 21.97 isn the 50m freestyle from Italy’s Leonardo Deplano and Brazil’s Gabriel Santos.

Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey added to a long series of consistently speedy 200m free swims in 1:55.35 ahead of Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey, 1:56.38, and Britain’s Freya Colbert, 1:56.58.

Italian and in 2019 World champion Simone Quadarella set a meet mark of 15:48.27 atop the 1500m free after a tight tussle with Isabel Gose, 15:50.56, third place going to the second Germany teamster home, Leonie Märtens, sister of 2024 world-ranked No1 400 freestyler Lucas.

Nicolo Martinenghi was another Italian building up in final preparations for Paris, a 58.90 in the 100m breaststroke leaving him ahead of Dutch visitor Caspar Corbeau, 59.23, home challenger Ludovico Viberti, 59.27, and Olympic champion Adam Peaty, in 59.51 after turning level with Martinenghi.

Brazil’s Guilherme Costa took the 400m free in 3:45.33, 0.48sec ahead of Belgium’s Lucas Henveaux; and Nils Korstanje, of The Netherlands, joined the season sub-51 crew in the 100m butterfly, on 50.90.
